Project Carbon Cab

April 2009

I have always liked crew cab VW's. I also have owned a 63 back in 1992-93 that I traded for something but,I cant remember what it was I traded for. This particular crew cab I first ran across when I was leaving the Bug-In 34 in Fontana Ca. I was leaving the show heading back to the hotel when I had seen this truck on a trailer with for sale written on it. I made a quick U turn and flagged the driver down his name was Brandon. I looked it over and we discussed what he wanted for the truck. I had too many cars at the time so I offered up a trade. We discussed it for a week or 2 and then it never happened. So I forgot about it until I saw it at the 2009 VW Classic. Here are pics I found on the samba of the bus for sale in the swap meet.

Well Brandon and I worked out a deal and the Double cab was now mine. My plan was to have a quick paint job. Something inexpensive but decent. When I was on the phone with Buddy(talking about my split)he asked me who was painting it. I told him it was a budget build. He told me he wanted to paint it for what I had for my budget. I told him I didn't want it to take forever to get it painted and true to his word It was painted a month later. Here's some pics of it after paint.

The color is Q9 Meteor gray. Its from a Porsche Cayenne. I was inspired by the Cayenne on Tech Arts web site Here. The carbon fiber idea I got when I was watching Muscle Car on Speed Tv. My feeling was that would make it seem more race inspired. The bumper I though of while trying to make them not seem so heavy. I had the paint split the bumper to also make it look a little more sleek.

The trim will all be platinum color like the factory wheels. Oh yea wheels! Those would be boxster S wheels that I bought off John Dimaya at the classic. The brakes are used 944 Turbos that were supposed to go on the ghia. I had to order Turbo rotors since my n/a rotors were too small. I couldn't believe the difference in size. The turbo rotors ate 1"1/8 thick and 13" across. Can you say Monsters! I got all the modified parts from Lanner Khan at vdub engineering. The motor is also something else that was left over from project ghia. Its a 2650cc type 4 I split the engine to verify the internals then dropped it off the have everything cleaned and re-assembled. Since I am lazy I will leave this link to the gallery I have of the Carbon Cab
